Papers, 1861-1904.

Papers of George L. Prescott, an officer for a brief three-month term with the Mass. 5th Infantry Regiment and later with the 32nd Mass. Regiment during the Civil War. The papers contain letters (many with typescripts) both to and from Prescott, particularly with family and friends, with some official correspondence also included. The largest body of letters are from Prescott to his wife Sarah (Sallie) B. (Edes) in which he describes the daily military routine and camp life, including drills, morale, troop movements, military strategy, and plans for the regiment's future action. Prescott's letters, written from Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Fort Warren in Boston Harbor where the 32nd was first garrisoned, also describe battles and action in which the regiment was involved, including the first battle of Bull Run (5th Mass.) and (32nd Mass.) Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and Spotsylvania. (Cont.) Prescott was mortally wounded at Petersburg in 1864 and later materials relate to his posthumous brevet rank of Brigadier General, his estate, and military claims. Correspondents include John S. Keyes.
